RAID Data Recovery: RAID 5 and 6 Collapsed, How to Recover the Array
When a RAID array collapses do not write and do not attempt a rebuild. A recovery difficulty table for RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, the most common fatal mistakes and safe RAID data recovery with image based virtual reassembly.
Quick answer: RAID data recovery is restoring data when one or more disks in a multi disk array fail or the array configuration breaks. The most critical rule: when the array fails, do not write anything to the disks, do not attempt a rebuild and do not reset the controller. Every rebuild attempt writes wrong data over the remaining healthy disk and permanently lowers the recovery chance. The correct path is to take a read only bit for bit image of every disk, then analyze the array parameters (block size, disk order, parity layout) and reassemble the data virtually from the images. At its Ankara Hacettepe Teknokent laboratory, DSET recovers RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10 and nested arrays.
Servers, NAS devices and workstations use RAID to improve data safety and speed. But RAID is not a backup. When two disks fail at the same time, when a rebuild stops halfway or when the controller breaks, the array becomes inaccessible. This article explains how RAID failures happen, the most common fatal mistakes and why professional recovery works on images.
Why RAID fails
RAID arrays are designed to survive a single disk failure, but in the real world collapses usually follow this chain:
- Second disk failure. RAID 5 tolerates one disk loss. If a disk fails and the array runs degraded, a second failing disk makes data inaccessible.
- Error during rebuild. When a disk is replaced and rebuild starts, hidden read errors on the remaining disks surface and the rebuild stops halfway.
- Controller failure. When the RAID controller breaks or a replacement card does not recognize the old configuration, array metadata is lost.
- Wrong disk order. If disks are placed into different bays during maintenance, the array order breaks.
RAID levels and recovery difficulty
| RAID | Structure | Tolerance | Recovery note |
|---|---|---|---|
| RAID 0 | Striping, no parity | None | Hardest case if one disk fails, all disks required |
| RAID 1 | Mirroring | 1 disk | Recovery from a single disk usually possible |
| RAID 5 | Stripe plus distributed parity | 1 disk | Reassembly with parity if a second disk fails |
| RAID 6 | Stripe plus double parity | 2 disks | Reassembly with loss of up to two disks |
| RAID 10 | Mirrored stripes | Depends | Choosing the correct mirror is critical |
Parity based arrays can mathematically recompute the missing disk data from the parity on the remaining disks. For this, the block size and parity layout must be resolved correctly.
Most common fatal mistakes
In RAID recovery, what really destroys data is not the failure but the wrong action after it:
- Attempting a rebuild. A rebuild in degraded mode writes over the remaining disk. A rebuild with the wrong disk order corrupts data irreversibly.
- Replacing a disk and restarting the array. The controller often builds a fresh array with the new disk and overwrites the metadata.
- Running recovery software on the same disk. This permanently corrupts data because of writing to the same disk.
- Mixing disks. Disks removed without labels make the order uncertain.
The rule is clear: when the array fails, stop and write nothing to the disks.
How professional RAID recovery works
1. Read only image of every disk
First, every physical disk is cloned bit for bit through a write blocker. All analysis is done on these sector by sector images, the original disks are never touched. If there is a failing disk, it is first recovered at the hardware level and imaged.
2. Resolving array parameters
Block size, disk order, parity direction and rotation layout are analyzed on the images. When the correct parameters are found, the file system appears consistently.
3. Virtual reassembly
Instead of building the array on real hardware, it is reassembled virtually from the images. The missing disk is computed with parity. This method is safe because it writes nothing.
4. File system repair and verification
The file system on the reassembled volume is analyzed, files are extracted and integrity is checked. Virtualization volumes or NAS volumes require an extra layer of analysis.
NAS and hardware failure
NAS devices such as Synology and QNAP often use nonstandard array and file system layers. For disks that physically click or are not recognized, a clean room intervention may be needed first. DSET runs both logical array analysis and hardware disk recovery under one roof.
RAID data recovery with DSET
DSET applies an image based, non writing recovery process on server and NAS arrays. It reassembles the array virtually without risking it on real hardware, computes missing disks with parity and delivers the recovered data with an integrity check. If we cannot recover, there is no fee. We provide 24/7 emergency response from our Ankara Hacettepe Teknokent laboratory.
Frequently asked questions
Can RAID 5 be recovered with two disk failures? RAID 5 is designed to tolerate a single disk loss. If two disks fail the array collapses, but if the second disk failure is partial (some sectors are readable), that disk can be imaged with hardware recovery and the data reassembled with parity. Success depends on the state of the second disk.
I tried to rebuild the array, can it still be recovered? A rebuild lowers the chance because it writes over the remaining disk, but it does not always zero it out. The earlier you stop and hand it to an expert, the higher the odds. Do not perform new writes.
How long does recovery take? It depends on the number of disks, the failure type and whether hardware recovery is needed. Logical analyses finish in a few days, hardware failures take longer. An expedited process is offered for emergencies.
