Why Is Data Loss So Common in Izmir?

Izmir is Turkey's third largest economy and the powerhouse of the Aegean region. From the Aliaga refinery complex to the Kemalpasa Organized Industrial Zone, from the software studios in Bornova to the agencies in Alsancak, from the tourism businesses of Cesme to the production facilities in Buca, thousands of SMEs and large scale companies generate terabytes of data every day. At this intensity, data loss is statistically inevitable.

The Izmir specific triggers we observe in the field:

  1. Humid, salt laden sea air: In offices along the coastal strip such as Karsiyaka, Bostanli and Alsancak, contact corrosion on servers and external drives is markedly higher than in Ankara.
  2. Summer power fluctuations: During the July and August peak loads in the Bornova and Cigli industrial corridor, voltage drops and sudden outages frequently leave RAID arrays facing two simultaneous drive failures.
  3. Earthquake risk awareness: After the 2020 Izmir Bayrakli earthquake, many companies overhauled their backup strategies, yet production data stored in a single location is still widespread.
  4. Seasonal staff turnover: Along the Cesme, Alacati and Foca tourism belt, seasonal hiring increases accidental deletion and reformatting cases.
  5. Industrial controller failures: The loss of historical data logs in the SCADA and PLC systems in Kemalpasa and Aliaga turns into a serious problem during audit processes.

All of these varied scenarios demand a broad range of expertise, from logical recovery to clean room intervention. For a general overview of the subject, our 2026 Data Recovery Guide is a good starting point.

The Model DSET Offers Its Izmir Customers

Let us be transparent first: DSET does not have a physical office in Izmir. Our headquarters is on the Ankara Hacettepe University Teknokent campus. Why do we state this openly? Because in this industry there are many firms that advertise "we have an Izmir branch" but actually keep your device waiting at a small intermediary reseller, then forward it to Istanbul or Ankara. In that chain the device is packed twice and shipped twice, the KVKK data responsibility chain becomes blurred, and the timeline stretches out.

Our model is different:

  • Single point shipping: From your address in Izmir, the device comes directly to the Ankara Hacettepe Teknokent laboratory by insured courier.
  • Single data controller: From the moment the device is received until the moment it is handed back, it stays within the DSET chain, under a single signature in the scope of KVKK Law No. 6698.
  • Single reporting: Every step, from the preliminary analysis to the handover record, is logged in the same laboratory software.

Shipping time between Izmir and Ankara is usually 1 business day. For critical cases, same day courier shipping is also possible.

Which Devices and Scenarios Do We Handle?

The typical breakdown of requests coming from Izmir:

Individual and SME Level

  • Deleted family photos, thesis files and accounting archives from HDDs and SSDs.
  • A dropped external drive, a washed USB stick, a reformatted memory card.
  • WhatsApp and gallery recovery after a factory reset on a phone or tablet.
  • Deletion or snapshot loss on Btrfs or ext4 in NAS devices (Synology, QNAP, Asustor).

Corporate and Industrial Level

  • ERP database corruption at textile firms (Logo, SAP, Netsis, Mikro).
  • Loss of CAD and CAM files in automotive subindustry suppliers.
  • HACCP logs becoming inaccessible at food production facilities.
  • Recovery of SCADA historical data archives in Aliaga and Kemalpasa.
  • Reservation and POS database failures at tourism businesses.
  • Project files encrypted by ransomware at architecture and engineering offices.
  • Multiple drive failures in RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 arrays. For cases where a RAID 5 has collapsed, our detailed article explaining the process, the cost and the timeline: RAID 5 recovery.

Because of Izmir's industrial density, server and RAID cases in particular come to us more often than in Ankara and Istanbul.

Notes Specific to Izmir Industry

Textile and Apparel (Torbali, Kemalpasa, Buca)

CAD files, pattern archives and customer order history. The vast majority of these firms still work from a shared folder on a single Windows Server. A RAID 5 configuration is common, but the culture of periodic backup is weak. The most frequent case is the second drive collapsing during the rebuild after a single drive failure.

Automotive Subindustry (Aliaga, Cigli, Kemalpasa)

Solidworks, Catia and NX files are critical. Most engineering offices have not set up a PDM or PLM system properly. The loss of revision trees kept on a local disk can halt the production line for days. In this sector the immediate intervention package is frequently requested.

Food Production (Torbali, Menemen, Kemalpasa)

HACCP and traceability logs are a legal obligation. When temperature sensor data, batch tracking or production reports are deleted for some reason, a serious risk of sanctions arises during Ministry of Agriculture audits. When DSET recovers such log databases (usually MSSQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL), it also performs integrity testing.

Tourism and Hospitality (Cesme, Alacati, Foca, Selcuk)

During the peak season, a PMS (Property Management System) crash is a disaster. Table corruption in systems such as Otello, Sentido and Elektra immediately halts room sales. Our package for this sector includes attaching the recovered data to a staging server and validating it at the application level.

IT and Software (Bornova, Alsancak, Folkart Towers, EBILTEM)

Loss of Git repositories, container images and code on developers' notebooks. The young teams around Ege University EBILTEM and the IYTE Technopark especially come in with sudden death cases on SSDs. Our laboratory, where we have invested in the NVMe ecosystem, closes these cases with a high success rate.

Packaging: Shipping the Device Correctly from Izmir to Ankara

If the device is damaged in transit, even the best laboratory is helpless. ISO/IEC 27037 (ISO/IEC 27037 standard) defines clear rules for digital evidence and data transport. Our advice to customers:

  1. Power off the device. Keeping a still clicking HDD running enlarges the sector damage every second.
  2. Do not reformat and do not run CHKDSK. In logical cases this irreversibly corrupts the metadata.
  3. Use an anti static bag. Izmir's humid air is a particular risk for SSD and NVMe controller boards.
  4. The double box principle: Device, inner box, at least 5 cm of foam, outer box. There should be no rattling sound when shaken.
  5. Choose insured shipping. MNG, Aras, Yurtici, UPS, it does not matter; set the insurance limit to the value of the device.
  6. Write "Sensitive Electronics" on the label.
  7. Do not write your password or pattern lock on a separate note and put it in the box. Send it digitally instead.

For shipments from Konak, Karsiyaka, Bornova, Alsancak, Bayrakli, Cigli, Buca, Karabaglar, Bostanli, Gaziemir or the surrounding districts, we can send a dedicated packaging kit to customers who request one. Just reach us at +90 536 662 38 09.

The Process: What Happens After the Device Reaches Us?

Step by step, without inflating any of the terminology for marketing purposes:

1. Receipt and a photographed record. The moment the package is opened it is filmed. The device's serial number and physical condition are recorded. This step is the "chain of custody" requirement of ISO/IEC 27037.

2. Free preliminary analysis (usually 4 to 24 hours). The device is connected through a write blocker. No write operation is performed. SMART data, logs, head map and the file system table are read. We determine whether the case is logical, electronic or mechanical.

3. Price and timeline quote. A clear range is given by phone or email. If you do not approve, the return is free of charge (only the return shipping is borne by the customer).

4. Operation after approval.

  • In logical cases an image is taken, hashed, and recovery is performed on a working copy.
  • In electronic cases a donor board is matched and a ROM transfer is performed.
  • In mechanical cases a head transfer is carried out in the ISO 5 (Class 100) clean room drawer.
  • In RAID cases the drives are imaged one by one, after which the stripe and parity are rebuilt in a virtual array.

5. Verification. We check whether the recovered files open, run hash integrity and database consistency tests. A file list is sent to the customer as a PDF or CSV.

6. Handover. The data is delivered on an encrypted external drive or via secure SFTP. If you do not have a drive on hand, we supply one.

7. KVKK compliant deletion. Thirty days after handover (immediately, if the customer wishes), the working copies are wiped in accordance with the NIST 800-88 standard. A record is signed.

Throughout the entire process you can communicate directly with the Ankara center by phone. There is no intermediary, and a customer representative does not work from a script; the technical team answers.

KVKK and Legal Compliance: A Topic Thought Trivial but Actually Vital

When an Izmir based data controller (the company) transfers its data to a data processor (DSET), the Personal Data Protection Law No. 6698 (KVKK official site) defines a clear framework of shared responsibility. A data recovery process done incompletely or incorrectly can turn into serious administrative fines for the customer.

DSET's approach:

  • Data Processor Agreement: A KVKK compliant contract template is provided in advance to all corporate customers who request it.
  • Data residency: All processing is done in the physical laboratory inside Ankara Hacettepe Teknokent. There is no overseas cloud transfer.
  • Access logs: Who touched the device, when, and which command they ran is written to the audit log.
  • USOM coordination: If there is suspicion of ransomware or a targeted attack, we provide advisory support on the notification process with the National Cyber Incident Response Center (USOM).
  • TUBITAK BILGEM framework: We periodically benchmark our methodology standards against the cybersecurity guides published by TUBITAK BILGEM.

For health, finance and law offices and other sectors with a broad KVKK footprint, this framework is not optional but mandatory.

Pricing Logic

The variables that determine cost are clear: damage type (logical vs electronic vs mechanical), device type and capacity, RAID drive count, donor part requirement, and urgency. Pricing varies across a wide range, from individual logical cases to corporate multi RAID recoveries. A firm price can only be given after the free diagnosis; publishing a fixed list would be misleading. The no recovery, no fee principle is standard; only the return shipping is borne by the customer.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Will the drive get more damaged while being shipped from Izmir? With correct packaging, no. A drive with a mechanical problem is already sensitive to transport, but the foam padded double box and an upright position reduce the risk to a minimum.

Is it possible to bring the device in person? Of course. You can visit our office on the Hacettepe Teknokent campus. However, most of our customers prefer the convenience of shipping.

Is a same day result possible? In logical deletion cases, if the device arrives before noon, same day delivery is possible. In mechanical cases, due to donor sourcing, 2 to 7 business days is the typical timeframe.

Is there a discount for Ege University, Dokuz Eylul or IYTE students? We apply a student discount for academic cases (thesis, research data). A student ID is sufficient.

My company is in Kemalpasa OIZ; can I dismantle my server and ship it? Yes, but let us talk on the phone first. In some cases it is right to send the entire rack server without removing the drives, in others to take out only the drives. Remote guidance is free of charge.

Can ransomware encryption be reversed? In some variants yes, in others no. If you tell us the type we can answer quickly. In cases that cannot be decrypted, we try to recover backup points, shadow copies and the deleted original files.

My phone fell in water; should I immediately put it in a bag of rice? Please do not. Rice is an internet myth. Power the device off, do not try to dry it, and send it immediately. Corrosion advances by the hour.
