My TikTok Account Was Stolen: Recovery and Protection Guide
When your TikTok account is stolen the way to recover it is the password reset on the login screen and an in app account recovery request. Password and 2FA if you have access, ownership proof if you cannot log in, closing connected apps and protecting your audience.
Quick answer: When your TikTok account is stolen, the way to recover it is the forgot password flow on the app's login screen; TikTok lets you reset the password by sending a verification code to the phone number or email linked to the account. If you still have access, immediately change the password, close unfamiliar sessions in the manage devices section of security settings and enable two step verification. If the attacker changed both the password and the email, open an account recovery request from the feedback and help section inside the app; TikTok asks for information to verify your identity and account ownership. After recovery, revoke connected third party apps and make the password unique everywhere; otherwise the account is stolen again.
Because TikTok is both a large audience and a way to earn money, its compromise causes serious harm: the follower base, live stream gifts and brand collaborations come under risk. This article explains the way to recover a TikTok account and to secure it again afterward, step by step. Read it together with the first hour guide for general emergency response.
TikTok account recovery steps
| Situation | What to do | Channel |
|---|---|---|
| You still have access | Change password, close devices, enable 2FA | Settings, Security |
| Password changed, email intact | Reset password with code | Login screen |
| Password and email changed | Account recovery request | In app help |
| Identity verification requested | Provide ownership proof | TikTok recovery flow |
The essence of this table: if you have access you drop the attacker in seconds; if not, TikTok's in app recovery flow is the only correct path.
If you still have access
If you can log in, act fast. From settings and privacy go to the security tab, change the password to a strong and unique one and close all unfamiliar sessions in the manage devices section. Right after, enable two step verification; an authenticator app or email is more secure than an SMS code because a SIM swap attack can capture the SMS. For method choice, see the two step verification comparison.
If you cannot log in
If the attacker changed the password, use the forgot password flow on the login screen; TikTok sends a code to the phone or email linked to the account. If this information was also changed, open an account recovery request from the feedback and help section inside the app. TikTok asks for information to verify the account is yours: the registered email or phone, account creation date and ID if available. This process follows the same account takeover and recovery logic: first ownership is proven, then access is given back.
After recovery, close the root
Recovering the account is half the job. From the connected apps section, revoke all unfamiliar third party apps; attackers often leave persistent access through an app. Assume the entry likely came from a phishing page or a reused password from another leak, and switch to a unique password and a passkey for every account. For the right setup, see the password, 2FA and passkey security guide.
Protect your audience and income
Compromised TikTok accounts often send followers fake gifts, fake crypto opportunities or phishing links; live stream gifts and the wallet can also be a target. So warn your audience from another channel simultaneously with the technical recovery. For creators with brand collaborations this is a corporate incident; for a holistic approach, see the corporate social media account takeover article.
If it cannot be recovered
If the TikTok recovery request yields no result, you need to collect evidence and prepare for the legal path. Document change notifications, login alerts and fake posts. You can find the path to follow in the social media account cannot be recovered, digital evidence and legal process article, and the chain of custody rules in the digital evidence and chain of custody article.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I recover my TikTok account? Start from the forgot password flow on the login screen; TikTok sends a code to the phone or email linked to the account. If this information was also changed, open an account recovery request from the feedback and help section inside the app. TikTok asks for registered information and ID if available to verify ownership.
Two step verification was on but they still got in, why? SMS based verification can be bypassed with a SIM swap or when a fake page also asks for the code. So using an authenticator app or email verification instead of SMS is more secure. After recovery, close all sessions and revoke connected apps.
Am I responsible for the crypto or gift streams from my account? If your account was compromised, the sent content was not shared with your will. Still, to reduce harm warn your audience from another channel and document the incident. Screenshots and platform notifications support both your recovery request and, if needed, your legal process.
