Çankaya Data Recovery: 15 Minutes from the Heart of Ankara to Hacettepe Teknokent

Çankaya is the administrative, academic and legal nerve center of Ankara. In a geography where the Grand National Assembly, the ministries, the high judicial institutions, the bar associations, the university rectorates and the large independent-profession offices are gathered in the same district, data loss is not an ordinary IT matter. It often hangs on the delivery date of an expert report, a tax audit, a thesis defense or a KVKK breach-notification deadline. This page describes the data recovery process provided from our Hacettepe Teknokent laboratory in Beytepe for the individuals and institutions who live or work in Çankaya, or who serve their clients from Çankaya.

The Distance and the Logic from Çankaya to Beytepe

Travel to Beytepe Hacettepe Teknokent from central Çankaya, from Kızılay, from Kavaklıdere or from the Tunalı Hilmi line varies between 15 and 30 minutes during the day. When the Eskişehir Yolu route via Söğütözü and Çukurambar is used, it is a 15-minute distance during off-traffic hours. This proximity is not coincidental: Çankaya's academic and legal user profile needs a controlled laboratory environment. The fact that the place where a data recovery operation will be carried out offers conditions close to cleanroom standards is critical in terms of the "the original state of the data carrier must not be corrupted" principle recommended by the ISO/IEC 27037 document.

For us, a disk arriving from Çankaya can be delivered to the laboratory in Beytepe within the same day, the preliminary diagnosis can be started the same day, and in logical cases the first image can be completed within a few hours. If the customer wishes, they bring the device themselves; if they prefer, they send it via a courier within Çankaya.

Çankaya's Data Loss Profile: Who, Why, Which Device?

We summarize the cases we see in Çankaya not as real customer cases but as categorical patterns. No concrete client, advisee or patient data appears on this page.

Law Firms (Kızılay, Kavaklıdere, Tunalı Hilmi)

Most of the offices of the thousands of lawyers registered with the Çankaya bar are in the Kızılay, Kavaklıdere and Tunalı Hilmi triangle. The most frequent scenarios we encounter in these offices:

  • The external disk holding the case-file backups downloaded from UYAP being dropped
  • The accidental deletion of a Word petition archive accumulated over years on a secretary's computer
  • Client folders kept on a shared NAS being encrypted by ransomware
  • A laptop suddenly giving a not-recognized error on its SSD

Lawyer data can also contain special-category data under the KVKK (health, criminal conviction, ethnic origin, etc.). For this reason, how the image taken during the data recovery process is stored, who accesses it, and what happens after delivery must be clarified by contract. For a detailed process, you can review our Ankara digital forensics and expert opinion page.

Financial Advisor and Independent Audit Offices (Çukurambar, Söğütözü)

The Çukurambar and Söğütözü office towers host Ankara's new-generation concentration of financial advisors. Here the most destructive type of loss is the collapse of the server holding the database files (DBF, FDB, MDF) of accounting software such as Luca, Mikro or Eta. During tax-declaration periods, this kind of loss means not just data but the risk of an administrative fine.

We see scenarios where, in RAID 1 structures usually made up of two disks, both disks have worn out, or where, in four-disk RAID 5 structures, two disks drop out at the same time. Specifically for RAID 5, our RAID 5 has collapsed: recovery process and cost article explains the methodology step by step.

Architecture and Engineering Offices (Bahçelievler, Aşağı Ayrancı, Maltepe)

CAD, Revit, ArchiCAD and SolidWorks files are large and have many versions. In these offices, external-disk dependency is high, and carrying disks to the field and the construction site normalizes physical damage. A WD My Passport with a burned-out connector board, a Seagate Expansion with a crashed head, a SanDisk SSD with a faulty controller board are the cases we are most tired of talking about.

Academics and Doctoral Candidates (Çankaya University, Hacettepe Sıhhıye, METU, the Bilkent neighborhood)

Çankaya is in the gravitational field of four major universities: Çankaya University, Hacettepe (the Sıhhıye campus is nearby, Beytepe is adjacent), METU and Bilkent. Thesis-data loss is experienced under minute-by-minute pressure because the jury date is fixed. SPSS outputs, NVivo project files, MATLAB simulation records, microscope images and laboratory log files, when not backed up, can reset years of a doctoral study.

Public Institutions and Civil Society

The Grand National Assembly, the ministries, the high judiciary, professional chambers, foundations and associations are concentrated in Çankaya. In requests coming from these institutions, a confidentiality agreement, physical-facility access control and a data-destruction protocol must be standard. By the very nature of institutional data, not only the data recovery but also the subsequent destruction stage must be documented. If the customer requests, the images and temporary copies are destroyed in a recorded manner, under supervision and with irreversible methods; this operation is reported with a separate delivery document.

Health Professionals and Clinics (the Çankaya, Sıhhıye Line)

The Hacettepe Sıhhıye campus and the private clinics, imaging centers and dentist practices in Çankaya produce dense patient data. The collapse of a PACS server, a head failure on the disk holding the panoramic-X-ray archive, the corruption of a patient-tracking software's database file are the scenes we most frequently encounter in this category. Health data is special-category data under the KVKK; the recovery process must be carried out in line with this sensitivity.

The Process: What Does a Disk Leaving Çankaya See in Beytepe?

The ISO/IEC 27037 standard is an international reference for the process of identifying, collecting, acquiring and preserving digital evidence. Although data recovery is not the same thing as digital forensics, the same discipline must be applied so that a disk that may later become the subject of a dispute is not corrupted during the operation.

The process steps:

  1. Phone consultation and preliminary triage. The device's make, model, capacity, failure symptom, the type of lost data and the level of urgency are discussed. An initial estimate of whether it may be logical or physical is shared.
  2. Delivery. The customer comes to Beytepe or sends it via a courier within Çankaya. A record is signed. The device serial number, its physical condition and the signature of the technician receiving it are recorded.
  3. Write-protected preliminary diagnosis. The device is connected with read-only access. SMART data is read, and the physical noise and electrical behavior are observed. It is clarified whether it is a logical error, a head failure, a PCB problem or firmware (service area) corruption.
  4. Written quote. The case category, estimated time and price range are given in writing. No paid operation begins without approval.
  5. Imaging. A one-to-one copy of the disk is taken. The original device is not touched after this, and all recovery work is done on the image. This is the fundamental principle of ISO/IEC 27037.
  6. Recovery. In logical cases, the file system is rebuilt; in physical cases, parts are replaced with a head donor or the PCB is repaired. SSD cases require direct access to the manufacturer chips and reassembly.
  7. Verification and delivery. The recovered data is listed for the customer and delivered on a new and sound carrier. The image copies are destroyed in line with the period specified in the contract.

For devices containing special-category data under the KVKK, we clarify by contract the obligations arising from our status as a Data Processor (minimum security measures, access logs, breach-notification processes). The Guide on the Obligations of Data Controllers in the Processing of Personal Data published by the KVKK is the reference document.

Common Device Groups and Our Approach

HDD (Mechanical Disk)

Head noise, clicking, failure to spin, and not appearing in the BIOS are the classic physical symptoms. The smell of a burned PCB is clearly noticeable. In these cases, you must never experiment with home-grade software; each retry can scratch the platter (the magnetic layer) and lower the chance of recovery.

SSD and NVMe

On an SSD there are often no early symptoms. The disk suddenly becomes invisible, or its capacity appears as 0 bytes. The controller chip has crashed. In this case, recovery requires the chip-off method or the manufacturer's special command set (vendor-specific). The chance of data recovery on an SSD after a TRIM or format operation done in the wrong hands is much lower than on a traditional HDD.

RAID Systems

NAS devices (Synology, QNAP, TerraMaster), DAS enclosures and in-server RAID controllers. If the structure information (stripe size, disk order, parity rotation) is unknown, it is rebuilt from the image. We never recommend a "rebuild" attempt with the original disks; a failed rebuild causes the second disk to drop out as well and makes the data loss permanent.

USB Stick and SD Card

Physical breakage, water contact, a contact problem or a controller crash. With solder repair under a microscope, data access is possible in most cases.

Phone and Tablet

It is not possible to recover data with no backup from an encrypted iPhone; at this point we have to be honest. On the Android side, the scenario is similar on new-generation devices that are not rooted. On devices with physical damage whose password is known, logical recovery is possible.

An Honest Framework on Pricing

We do not give a numeric price on this page. Because we want to be realistic: the price of the same 1 TB external disk is in one range for logical deleted-file recovery, in another range for a physical case requiring a head donor, and in an entirely different range for a NAS whose RAID 5 has lost two disks. After taking the device information and failure symptom from you in the phone consultation, we share an estimated range verbally; after the diagnosis we give a written firm quote. We do not charge a fee without your approval.

There are two traps commonly encountered in the market: (1) workshops that give a firm price over the phone usually multiply the price after the diagnosis; (2) the definition of "if no data is recovered" behind the slogan "no fee if no data is recovered" is usually kept very broad in the contract. A written quote and a transparent definition are your right.

In Çankaya's intense work tempo, the loss of a case file, thesis data, an accounting database or an architectural project can stop the flow of life. The right first move is to power off the device and get it to an expert laboratory. Every subsequent click, every "recovery software" attempt, every "I know someone" move reduces the chance of recovery. A disciplined process that begins with the first phone call usually means the data comes back safe and sound. DSET, since 2003, Ankara Hacettepe Teknokent Beytepe; +90 536 662 38 09.
