Quick Answer

If your phone gets wet, do not charge it and do not put it in rice; power it off immediately and bring it to a specialist lab as soon as possible. On a phone with a broken screen the data is usually intact and recoverable. But we must be honest: a locked, encrypted, and completely dead phone often cannot be recovered without the passcode.

Phone Data Recovery in Ankara

When you face a phone failure in Ankara, the first question is always the same: Can my photos, contacts, messages, and work documents be recovered? At DSET, since 2003, we answer this question every day in our laboratory at Hacettepe Teknokent Beytepe. From Cankaya to Kecioren, from Kizilay to Sincan, we work to bring back the traces of life stored on iPhone and Android devices arriving from every district of Ankara.

Modern smartphones work differently from computers. On a computer, data often sits in plain form on the disk, but on current phones everything is encrypted at the hardware level. This is why phone data recovery is a specialized field that requires knowing both micro electronics repair and the realities of encryption. In this guide we explain clearly which cases are genuinely recoverable, which ones run into physical limits, and what you should not do to avoid harming your phone.

Types of Phone Failure

Data loss on phones happens in different scenarios, and each requires a different recovery approach.

Water or Liquid Damage

Dropping into water, the sea, a sink, or spilling tea or cola is the most common failure we see. Liquid causes corrosion on the contact points of the board. Time is critical here. If we intervene in the first hours, the board can be cleaned and the chance of recovery is high. On devices that sit for days or that someone keeps trying to power on, corrosion advances and the trace lines reaching the memory chip get damaged.

Broken Screen but Device Works

After a fall the screen breaks but the device keeps working in the background. This is one of the best scenarios, because the data is fully intact. We replace the screen or connect the device to an external display and back up the data. Even if touch does not work, a solution can usually be found.

Dead or Non Booting Phone

On phones that do not turn on at all, the problem may be the power circuit, the battery, a short on the board, or a failed component. The critical question here is whether the device is locked and encrypted. We cover this in detail in the encryption section below.

Accidentally Deleted Data

Accidentally deleting photos, videos, or messages is common. On modern phones, deleted data immediately risks being overwritten in the encrypted area. So if you deleted something by accident, use the phone as little as possible and do not load any new files.

Forgotten Passcode

Forgetting the screen lock passcode, pattern, or password is the most sensitive situation. In the encryption section below we explain why we have to be honest here.

iPhone and Android Encryption Realities

The most misunderstood topic in phone data recovery is encryption. Instead of making exaggerated promises, we owe you the truth.

iPhone and the Secure Enclave

On iPhone devices, Apple uses a separate security chip called the Secure Enclave. All of your device data is encrypted with a hardware bound key. This key is tied to your screen lock passcode. This means that without the passcode, even if we physically remove the memory chip and read it, we only see meaningless encrypted data. Even Apple cannot unlock this remotely. As a result, extracting data from a locked iPhone whose passcode is unknown is not possible, even if the device is fully intact. That is the honest truth.

Android and File Based Encryption (FBE)

Current Android devices use File Based Encryption by default. The logic is similar to iPhone: user data is encrypted with keys tied to the screen lock credential. So on a current and locked Android phone, accessing user data without the passcode is also usually not possible. Some very old models or devices where encryption was not enabled can be exceptions, but on phones from recent years this window has closed.

What This Encryption Means for Us

In short: if the hardware is intact and you know the passcode, we will most likely recover the data even if the phone does not turn on. If the hardware is intact but the passcode is unknown, encryption prevents us from extracting the data. We prefer to deliver the bad news at the start rather than sell false hope later.

What Can and Cannot Be Recovered

Situation Recoverable First Step
Screen broken, device works Yes, usually full Do not power off, bring it
Water damage, fast action High likelihood Do not charge, power off and bring
Water damage, waited days Low, depends on corrosion Still bring for diagnosis
Dead, passcode known High likelihood Board diagnosis needed
Dead, passcode unknown Usually no, due to encryption Check cloud backup
Accidentally deleted Depends Stop using the phone
Cloud backup exists Yes, from backup iCloud or Google account

Chip-off and ISP for Damaged Boards

On devices with severely damaged boards, two advanced techniques come into play. In the chip-off method, the memory chip is removed from the board with controlled heat and read with a special reader. In the ISP (In System Programming) method, access is gained directly through specific test points on the board without removing the chip. These techniques save data on boards that no longer power on due to water or impact. But the encryption rule still applies here: even if we read the chip, if the content is encrypted and the key is missing, the raw data stays meaningless. So chip-off mostly yields results on older devices or when the passcode is known.

Cloud Backups: Often Your Best Chance

Even if the phone cannot be physically recovered, your data may be sitting in the cloud. For iPhone users, iCloud backup, and for Android users, the Google account backup and Google Photos often run quietly in the background. Even if your device has died, by signing into the same account from another phone you can reach your photos, contacts, and some app data. So one of the first places to check in a phone data loss is your cloud account.

What You Should Not Do

Wrong interventions can turn a recoverable device into an unrecoverable one. The most common mistakes are the following.

Do not put a wet phone in rice. Rice is nothing more than a myth; it lets moisture and dust in and does not stop corrosion. Do not charge a wet phone, because electricity in a damp circuit leads to a short and permanent damage. Do not keep turning a wet phone on and off to test it; every attempt accelerates corrosion. On a device whose passcode you forgot, do not make repeated wrong passcode attempts; on some devices, after a certain number of failed attempts the device wipes itself for security. Do not try to dry the phone with hot air sources like a hair dryer; heat damages the components.

Reach DSET From Every District of Ankara

DSET provides phone data recovery service across all of Ankara. We accept devices arriving from every part of the city, especially Cankaya, Kizilay, Kecioren, Yenimahalle, Mamak, Etimesgut, Sincan, Altindag, and Golbasi. Our laboratory is located on the Hacettepe Teknokent Beytepe campus and has the equipment required for micro electronics repair.

If you cannot leave your workplace or home, you can use our pickup and delivery service. From provinces outside Ankara, you can send us your device by secure cargo; we share the diagnosis result by phone and do not start any work without your approval.

If you are not sure about the type of failure, our guide what to do if your iPhone gets wet is a good starting point for the first steps. We explained what to look for when choosing the right laboratory in our guide how to choose a data recovery center.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

My phone got wet and I put it in rice, did I do the right thing?

No. Rice does not effectively absorb moisture and it lets dust in. What you should do is turn the device off immediately, not charge it, and bring it to the lab as soon as possible. The first hours significantly increase the chance of recovery.

My screen broke, is my data still there?

Yes, most of the time it is. The screen is only a display component; the data is on the memory chip. If the device is working in the background, we can fully recover your data by replacing the screen or using an external connection.

I forgot my passcode, can the data be extracted?

Here we must be honest. Current iPhone and Android devices encrypt data tied to the screen lock passcode. If the passcode is unknown, the data usually cannot be extracted even if the device is fully intact. In this case your cloud backup is your best chance.

Which is harder to recover, iPhone or Android?

Both use strong encryption. The Secure Enclave on iPhone and File Based Encryption on Android produce the same basic result: data cannot be taken from a locked device without the passcode. On the hardware repair side, difficulty varies by model and damage, and the brand alone is not the deciding factor.

How long does phone data recovery take?

In simple cases, for example a working device with a broken screen, results are often available the same day or within a few days. Advanced cases involving water damage and board repair can take longer. After the initial diagnosis we give you a clear timeframe and status.
