WD (Western Digital) Data Recovery: My Passport, Elements, My Book and Internal Drives
Quick answer: Did your WD drive drop, vanish, click, or does your PC say "format the disk"? Western Digital drives, especially My Passport and Elements portables, My Book desktops and internal WD Blue/Red/Black models, have a specific architecture. With the right method and donor access they recover well, but a wrong move (opening a dropped or clicking drive) loses data permanently. DSET recovers WD drives in its Hacettepe Teknokent cleanroom. Three recovery critical traits of WD architecture
- USB bridge and hardware encryption on portables. On models like My Passport, encryption is often in the USB bridge board, not the disk, so removing the disk and plugging it directly does not unlock data and uncontrolled attempts are risky.
- SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording). Many recent WD models overlap data like shingles to raise capacity, making recovery more complex than classic CMR drives.
- Head stack sensitivity. 2.5 inch portable WD drives are very shock sensitive, a small drop damages the head stack and causes clicking, requiring a cleanroom and a matching donor head stack.

Most common WD faults
| Symptom | Likely cause | Urgency |
|---|---|---|
| Clicking | Head stack damage | Critical, power off |
| Spins but not seen | Firmware/service area, head | High |
| My Book silent, not seen | USB bridge/PCB | Medium |
| "Format the disk" | File system corruption | High, do not format |
| Slow, freezes on copy | Bad sectors, SMR | Back up now |
First response
If it clicks, power off and do not reopen, every spin worsens head damage, see the clicking guide. If seen but files do not open, do not write, never accept "format". Do not shake or open a dropped drive.
Why donor parts and a cleanroom matter
A physical fault may need a head, PCB or motor swap from a matching donor in a dust free cleanroom, a wrong donor or desk opening kills the drive. Since 2003, we have donor access and a cleanroom. See the price list.
FAQ
Encrypted My Passport? Yes with your password, since encryption is in the USB bridge a special process applies, not without. Dropped and clicking? Often recoverable, but only if you did not keep opening it. Is SMR harder? More complex but recoverable for an experienced lab. Ship it? Yes, see Izmir recovery steps.
