iPhone Got Wet: Data Recovery and What to Do

TL;DR: The first 30 minutes after an iPhone gets wet are critical. Power the device off immediately, do not try to dry it (the rice trick is a myth), put it in an anti-static bag, and bring it to a lab. On iPhones, an IP rating means "water resistance," not waterproofing. PCB cleaning is essential before corrosion begins. The Lightning port must be checked, and if the screen is damaged, an iCloud backup is the fastest path to recovery. Liquids containing salt, chlorine, or sugar are far more aggressive than fresh water.

When an iPhone gets wet, panic is your biggest enemy. The first action you take determines whether the data can be brought back. In this guide we cover the entire spectrum, from the first minutes after water contact all the way to forensic-grade NAND reading. The first 30 minutes: what to do and what not to do

The first half hour is the golden window before corrosion sets in. If you use this time correctly, data can be fully recovered in most cases.

What to do:

  1. Take the device out of the water immediately. Seconds matter.
  2. Power it off RIGHT AWAY by long-pressing the power button. Electronics that meet liquid while powered on suffer far more damage from short circuits than a device that is switched off.
  3. Pull out the SIM tray. This protects the SIM and also allows a little air circulation through that slot.
  4. Gently dry the OUTSIDE of the device with a towel or microfiber cloth. Do not push moisture inward.
  5. Place it in an anti-static bag or a clean, sealed box together with a few packets of silica gel.
  6. Get it to a competent lab as soon as possible.

What not to do:

  • Do NOT bury it in rice. Apple Support does not recommend rice to dry your device; on the contrary, rice dust gets into the connectors and causes additional damage (source: support.apple.com).
  • Do NOT use a hair dryer, radiator, microwave, or direct sunlight. Heat damages the internal adhesive of the housing and the polarizing film of the LCD.
  • Do NOT keep pressing buttons to test it. Every button press can let the liquid find a new path across the PCB.
  • Do NOT plug it in to charge. This is the second most common source of damage. Charging current can burn out the PMIC or Tristar IC on a wet PCB in a single second.
  • Do NOT shake the device to get the water out. The water slides into deeper areas instead.

The truth about iPhone IP ratings

From the iPhone 7 onward, models are rated IP67 or IP68. This rating is measured under controlled laboratory conditions according to JEDEC and IEC standards (source: jedec.org). Real-world use is a different story.

As stated on Apple's official page, liquid resistance is not a permanent feature and decreases over time with normal wear and tear. In other words, an iPhone 13 that was IP68 from the factory does not have the same seal after riding around in your pocket for two years. The housing gasket, the speaker mesh, and the SIM-tray gasket all fatigue over time.

The rating also applies only to FRESH WATER. The following liquids are NOT covered by the IP rating:

  • Sea water (salt, chloride, magnesium)
  • Chlorinated pool water
  • Soapy water, detergent, shampoo
  • Carbonated drinks, fruit juice, coffee, tea
  • Alcohol, perfume

These liquids cause corrosion and conductive bridges in electronics far more quickly. In fresh water you may have a 72-hour window, but in sea water visible green-blue deposits begin within 24 hours.

How does water damage an iPhone?

Once a device is submerged, a chain reaction of damage begins:

  1. Micro-bridges across the PCB. Water conducts electricity. It opens new conductive paths even between very low-voltage points. When the device is on, this causes an instant short circuit.
  2. Connector corrosion. The Lightning port, battery FPC, display FPC, camera FPC, and speaker connectors oxidize. Conductivity drops.
  3. Mold and mineral buildup. In sea water especially, salt crystals leave deposits across the PCB.
  4. Display connector. If the LCD protection diode burns out, you see a white screen, a blue screen, or a line of half-dead pixels.
  5. Mainboard PMIC and Tristar. These two chips manage the iPhone's power and charging. They are the components most often hit by liquid contact.

As the hours pass, corrosion advances. After 24 hours, simple drying and cleaning may not be enough, and micro-soldering-level intervention is required.

The device won't turn on, what can be done?

There is a standard diagnostic workflow for a device that arrives at the lab.

Test 1: Does it charge?

The device is connected to an external USB ammeter or a controlled power supply. We check whether it draws current from the Lightning port. If it draws no current, or draws abnormally high current (a sign of a short circuit), there is a problem in the PMIC or battery circuit. In that case, that circuit must be repaired before the device can power on.

Test 2: Does a computer recognize it?

The device is connected to a Mac or PC over USB. We check whether the Apple Mobile Device Service detects it and whether Finder or iTunes sees the device. Apple's official support pages list this as a standard troubleshooting step (support.apple.com).

Test 3: DFU mode

Quick-press Volume Up, quick-press Volume Down, then hold the Side button (the combination varies by model). If we can put it into DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode, we know the mainboard works at a basic level and that there is only a software or partial hardware fault. If DFU is possible, the chance of extracting data is high.

Data recovery paths

Path 1: The device comes back to life

If the device powers on and works normally, an encrypted backup is taken immediately over USB with iTunes or Finder, without wasting time. The Apple ID password must be known. This backup can later be restored to a new iPhone.

Path 2: An iCloud backup exists

This is the fastest path. If iCloud Backup was active, the user gets a new device, signs in with Apple ID + password + 2FA, and chooses Restore from iCloud Backup. From icloud.com you can also check which devices have backups and the date of the last backup. With this method, photos, messages, app data, and health data are largely recovered.

Path 3: The device won't turn on and there is no iCloud backup

Forensic-grade work is required. The workflow is generally as follows:

  • The device is opened and the mainboard is removed from the housing.
  • Manual cleaning with high-purity isopropyl alcohol.
  • Corrosion and deposit removal in an ultrasonic bath.
  • Identification of burned components under a microscope and, if needed, replacement by micro-soldering.
  • The device is reassembled and a boot is attempted with controlled power.

If the device comes back to life, data is extracted. At this point, commercial forensic platforms such as Cellebrite UFED can capture a logical or physical image on supported models (source: cellebrite.com).

Path 4: The PCB is burned out, the NAND is intact

The most critical case. The mainboard may be beyond recovery, but the NAND flash chip may be intact. On iPhones, the NAND is soldered to the PCB as a BGA; chip-off is difficult, but possible.

There is an important constraint here: on iPhones, user data is encrypted with AES, and part of the encryption key is held in the Secure Enclave. So reading the NAND alone is not enough. The chance of getting past this barrier varies by model and iOS version. On A11 and later SoCs, the Secure Enclave makes solving this without the device practically impossible. On older models (iPhone 5, 5s, 6, 6s), NAND mirroring or FPGA-level reading is possible in some cases.

Apple service vs forensic recovery

There is a critical distinction here. In the typical case, an Apple authorized service center replaces the device and takes no responsibility for the data. The service policy is replacement, not preservation. If the liquid contact indicator (LCI) inside your iPhone has been triggered, Apple considers this out of warranty in most cases.

If you want your data, there are two paths:

  • Accept the warranty replacement, hand over the device, and sacrifice the data.
  • Go to an independent forensic or data-recovery lab; in this case your warranty ends but your data may be recovered.

Users usually make this choice at the last moment. The right decision depends on how valuable the data is and how fresh the iCloud backup is.

If iCloud backup isn't active: turn it on NOW

Go to Settings → Apple ID (your name at the top) → iCloud → iCloud Backup → turn on Back Up This iPhone.

It backs up automatically while connected to Wi-Fi and plugged in to charge. If the free 5 GB isn't enough, an iCloud+ subscription costs very little per month. This single action is your biggest insurance against future water damage, theft, or drops.

Sea water is an exceptional case. Someone who drops their iPhone into the sea at the beach and waits a day for it to dry usually finds that the repair cost exceeds the data-recovery cost. The right response is to power the device off as you leave the beach and bring it to a lab the same day.

Which iPhone model is more resistant?

  • iPhone 7, 7 Plus: IP67 (1 meter, 30 minutes, fresh water, under test conditions)
  • iPhone 8, X, XR: IP67
  • iPhone XS, XS Max, 11: IP68 (2 meters, 30 minutes)
  • iPhone 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max: IP68 (4 meters)
  • iPhone 12, 13, 14: IP68 (6 meters, 30 minutes)
  • iPhone 15, 16: IP68 (6 meters, 30 minutes)

The numbers may look impressive, but this testing is for factory-fresh conditions. They do not hold for a device that has been used for a year, dropped once, and has a cracked housing. Apple's warranty also does not cover liquid damage (official policy, support.apple.com).

KVKK and privacy

An iPhone holds the full spectrum of personal data: photos, messages, email, health data, financial accounts, ID photos. DSET's approach is fully compliant with KVKK (kvkk.gov.tr):

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does rice really work?

No. Apple Support does NOT recommend rice as a drying method. Rice cannot remove water that has gotten into the PCB; it only absorbs a bit of surface moisture. On the contrary, rice dust gets into the connectors.

If there is no iCloud backup, is the data lost completely?

No, but the cost goes up. If the device comes back to life, the data is extracted. If the PCB is burned out, NAND reading is attempted; the chances vary by model.

Will Apple service accept a water-damaged iPhone?

They will accept it but treat it as out of warranty. The device replacement is charged, and the data inside the device is not returned.

The blue or red water sticker was triggered, is the warranty void?

Yes. The Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) changes color on liquid contact, and Apple treats this as out of warranty.

Aren't models before the iPhone X water-resistant?

The iPhone 7 and later are IP67/IP68 certified. The iPhone 6s and earlier have no official liquid resistance, so any liquid contact is a serious risk.

How long does data recovery take?

It varies with the severity of the case. Simple corrosion cleaning takes 1 to 2 days, micro-soldering and component replacement 3 to 7 days, and NAND-level work can take 2 to 4 weeks.

After the phone is repaired, will it get its old speed back?

The goal of data recovery is to extract the data, not to keep the device long-lived. A liquid-exposed iPhone is usually used as a backup device after data extraction; it cannot be trusted as a primary phone.
