Quick answer: DSPM (Data Security Posture Management) is an approach that finds where an organization's sensitive data is, classifies it, and continuously monitors who accesses that data and how. While classic security focuses on infrastructure (servers, network, cloud configuration), DSPM focuses directly on the data itself. Its question is: which sensitive data is where, who can access it, and what is the risk.

Why did DSPM emerge?

Organizations often do not know where their data is. Data is scattered across cloud storage, databases, backups, test environments, files shared by employees and forgotten buckets. These scattered copies are called "shadow data" and are the silent source of breaches.

DSPM answers this by first finding and classifying the data. Because you cannot protect data whose location you do not know. DSPM maps sensitive data, shows who accesses it, and prioritizes the riskiest points.

The difference between DSPM and CSPM

These two are often confused but look at different layers.

Topic CSPM DSPM
Focus Cloud infrastructure configuration The data itself
Question Are the cloud settings secure Where is sensitive data, who accesses it
Example finding A storage bucket left open The customer identity data inside that bucket
Approach Infrastructure centric Data centric

The practical distinction is this. CSPM says "the bucket is misconfigured." DSPM says "that bucket holds the identity data of 30 thousand people and it is open to everyone." They complement each other, but DSPM tells you what is happening to the data.

What does DSPM do?

DSPM typically carries out four tasks together:

  • Discovery: Finds where sensitive data is across all cloud and on premises environments.
  • Classification: Determines the type of data (identity, health, payment, trade secret).
  • Access analysis: Shows who accesses that data and with what privileges.
  • Risk prioritization: Addresses the most sensitive and most exposed data first.

Why does it matter for data protection (KVKK)?

Data protection law (KVKK in Turkey) expects organizations to know and protect the personal data they process. But you can neither protect data whose location you do not know nor make a correct notification in a breach. DSPM makes compliance concrete by surfacing shadow data and real personal data leaked into test environments. For example, unmasked customer data copied into a development environment is a typical DSPM finding and a serious breach risk.

The KAOS and DSET approach

In KVKK compliance consulting, DSET maps organizations' sensitive data and audits access to that data. Our KAOS security engine reports exposed databases, real personal data leaked into test environments and unmasked sensitive fields during source code and data flow scans. Our goal is not an inventory on paper but showing with evidence where the data actually is and to whom it is exposed.

Frequently asked questions

Are DSPM and CSPM the same? No. CSPM looks at cloud infrastructure configuration, for example telling you that a storage bucket is misconfigured and left open. DSPM looks at the data itself, telling you which sensitive data is in that bucket and who accesses it. They complement each other, but DSPM is data centric while CSPM is infrastructure centric.

Is DSPM required for data protection (KVKK)? DSPM is not a legal obligation, but it makes compliance much easier. KVKK expects the personal data being processed to be known and protected. It is hard to do that without knowing where the data is. DSPM makes compliance concrete and auditable by surfacing shadow data and personal data leaked into test environments.

What is shadow data and why is it risky? Shadow data is copies of data the organization is unaware of or has forgotten. Real customer data copied into test environments, old backups and abandoned cloud buckets are examples. These copies are usually less protected and open to more people, so they become the silent source of breaches. DSPM focuses on finding this shadow data.
