Disk Turned RAW and Will Not Open: Recovering Data Without Formatting
If your disk shows as RAW, will not open and asks to format, do not format. RAW means the file system is corrupt, not that the data is gone. The correct way to recover a RAW disk without losing data. Ankara DSET.
Disk Turned RAW and Will Not Open: Recovering Data Without Formatting
Quick answer: If your disk shows as RAW in Disk Management, will not open, and asks to be formatted, that usually does not mean the data is gone. RAW means the file system (NTFS or exFAT) has become unreadable. The data is most likely still there, only the table describing it is corrupt. Do not format, do not run chkdsk, do not write to the disk. Correct recovery rebuilds the file system from a clean image. Ankara DSET: +90 536 662 38 09.
What RAW means
Every partition has a file system that tracks where each file lives. When its header structures (boot sector, MFT) get corrupted, Windows cannot recognize it and shows the partition as RAW, meaning raw and unformatted. RAW does not mean empty. It means the index cannot be read.
Why disks go RAW
Power loss or sudden removal during a write, bad sectors hitting critical structures, an early physical failure, malware or faulty disk tools, and bad partition operations.
Why formatting is not the fix
Windows suggests format because that is all it knows. Format wipes the corrupt file system and writes a fresh empty one, destroying the address book to your data. chkdsk is equally risky on a RAW volume. Think copy first, not repair. See 9 mistakes that destroy data.
How the lab recovers a RAW disk
We check disk health and SMART, take a sector by sector image with a hardware imager without stressing the drive, analyze the NTFS or exFAT structures on the clone, then rebuild the corrupt table from backups and remnants and extract files with names and folders intact. All of it from the clone, never the original.
External drives
Portable USB disks go RAW most often because they are pulled without safe removal. If yours went RAW after a drop and also makes noise, the issue may be physical, so do not run it, bring it straight in. Ankara Hacettepe Teknokent: +90 536 662 38 09.
