Infotainment: the car remembering the phone
When a phone connects to the car via Bluetooth or USB, the infotainment system often copies the contacts, call logs, message notifications and sometimes the address book into its own memory. This can show that a phone connected to the car and whose it was, even if the phone is no longer present. Together with mobile forensics, infotainment data can be critical in establishing a person's relationship with a vehicle.
EDR: the black box of the crash moment
The event data recorder captures the vehicle's speed, throttle and brake pedal state, steering angle, seatbelt use and airbag deployment at and in the few seconds before an impact. This data is the basis of crash reconstruction: did the driver actually brake, what was the speed, was the belt fastened. EDR data is an objective source when witness accounts conflict, and is increasingly used in courts.
Location and time: navigation and telematics
The navigation system keeps visited and searched addresses, sometimes the full route history. Telematics systems (manufacturer connected services) may keep the vehicle's location, driving data and remote lock/unlock records in the cloud. This data can be decisive in theft, abduction or alibi inquiries by showing where a vehicle was at a certain time. For its evidentiary value, the source and timestamp of location data must be verified.
Evidence integrity: why care is needed
Vehicle systems are sensitive; a wrong intervention can corrupt or overwrite data. So data must be acquired with the correct interfaces and methods, changing it as little as possible, and the chain of custody documented. Acquired data is sealed with a hash and reported in the international standard format. Otherwise, even if technically correct, the data can be rejected in court.

Can data be extracted from every vehicle? No. The extractable data depends on the vehicle's make, model and hardware. Modern connected vehicles hold far richer data; older vehicles have limited sources.
Is EDR data present in every crash? Most modern vehicles have an event data recorder, but the recording scope and retention vary by model. The vehicle's power state and interventions after a crash can affect the data.
I deleted the phone, does a trace remain in the car? It can. If the phone connected to the car, the infotainment system may hold a copy of contacts and call logs; even if the phone is gone, this trace can be examined.
Is vehicle forensic examination legal? It is done within a legal framework at the request of the vehicle's owner or an authorized body. Unauthorized access is a crime; every examination proceeds on the basis of ownership and authorization.
